What are the benefits of a non-profit versus a for-profit community?
In a non-profit community such as NewBridge on the Charles, the primary goal is providing quality care and programming: we are an organization that does not revolve solely around meeting the "bottom line". It is more important to find a good match between appropriate customers and excellent service. If for any reason we feel that our community is not the right fit for a potential resident, we would feel bound to refer to another program.

What are the terms of the lease?
The lease is for a 12-month period although the lease can be terminated with only 30 days notice. If you enter into a respite lease, you are bound only to the time period you specify. Respite leases can be extended beyond the two week minimum to meet the needs of the guest.

What is a community fee?
A community fee is, in essence, a one-time entrance fee. It is equivalent to one month's rent and it contributes to the maintenance and upkeep of the community buildings that our residents live in and enjoy. Charging a community fee is standard practice in the assisted living industry.

How do you choose your staff?
The NewBridge Human Resource team does the initial screening of all potential hires. Once candidates pass the first round of screening, our management team completes a second interview. Occasionally we'll hire people on a per diem basis in order to observe their performance before they earn full-time status. This gives us both a chance to get to know each other better, and for our team to evaluate a new employee's skills. Memory support staff must have previous experience working with people with memory loss.

What is the longevity of your staff?
We're only a year old but the collective experience of the NewBridge management team speaks to their longevity in previous positions and the quality of their professional achievements. How is your staff trained?
New employees go through Hebrew SeniorLife's 16 hour new staff orientation. All employees on the NewBridge campus are also required to take an 8 hour dementia specialist training. Above and beyond this, all Assisted Living staff is required to attend an additional 14 hours of in-service training within a calendar year. Training isn't restricted to these formal sessions but continues through daily interactions between the managers and the support staff.

What is it like on move-in day?
Move-in day can be an emotionally charged experience for new residents and families. Our goal is to partner with you and to support a smooth and relaxed experience. When you arrive, you'll be greeted by our move-in coordinator who will escort you to your new home. We encourage a morning move. This gives you time to unpack and settle before you have your first meal with your family and a member of our management team. You'll receive other visits throughout the afternoon: our Nursing Director (to review your service plan and make sure all your medical needs are in order), Executive Director, a member of our direct care team and by a representative of the IT department. You will also get your picture taken for your name badge which also serves as your apartment key! All departments work together in a concerted effort to make sure your first day is well coordinated and pleasant.

What is a resident's average length of stay?
Typically the average stay in assisted living is 18 months to 2 years. In our experience, however, if someone is in the right environment with the right care, this time period can extend for years.

Is medical care available?
Yes, primary medical care is available on-site. The practice includes two geriatricians, two nurse practitioners, psychiatrist, dentist, occupational/physical/speech therapists and a podiatrist. In addition we also have weekly clinics with our nurse practitioner in the assisted living community. There is also a registered nurse on-duty 12 hours a day as well as nursing assistants 24 hours per day.

What is the range of costs?
For a 1 Bedroom apartment in traditional assisted living, the cost range is $6,500 to $7,000 per month. For a 2 Bedroom in traditional assisted living, the cost range is $8-10,000 per month. The second person fee is $2,000 per month. Memory support apartments are $7,600 per month.
A respite stay in traditional assisted living is $250/day (2 week minimum) and it is $275 per day in memory support (4 day minimum).

Is there transportation for medical appointments?
Yes. Personal transportation by car to medical appointments is available. You will be chauffeured by a NewBridge driver directly to the entrance of your destination.

What is the average transition time for new assisted living residents?
There is no hard and fast rule on the length of transition time as everyone's experience is so different. However, we recommend waiting at least a month to get a clear picture on how a new resident is integrating into the program. We have a care planning meeting within 30 days of your arrival to discuss the transition, goals, challenges and successes.

What kind of community trips are there?
We have frequent off site programs based on the needs and interests of our current residents. For example we might tour the Museum of Fine Arts with a private docent, attend a concert at Symphony Hall, travel to local historic sites, visit gardens and natural areas or simply go out for lunch. What types of multigenerational programs are there with the Rashi School?
We are very excited to welcome The Rashi school children and teachers starting this Fall as part of our multigenerational campus. We've already instituted a Multigenerational Committee that will create, implement and promote meaningful programs between our communities.
In the past year, we had amazing spiritual experiences celebrating Hanukah and Shavuot together and we are planning to continue joint celebrations, enhancing and enriching our community life with the joy of young energy and the wisdom of the older generation.
There are a lot of wonderful ideas for future multigenerational programs, such as having social justice electives visiting our Residents; Mitzvah projects; inviting NewBridge Residents to The Rashi school theatrical productions; a multigenerational chorus; and art projects.

Am I guaranteed a bed in the health care center when I need one?
Every resident of NewBridge receives priority access to each level of care provided on campus. Hebrew SeniorLife has two other rehabilitation communities that are also available on a priority basis, Orchard Cove in Canton and the Hebrew Rehabilitation Center in Roslindale.

When is the appropriate time to leave assisted living?
The Executive Office of Elder Affairs dictates clear guidelines on whether someone is appropriate for assisted living in the state of Massachusetts. To see the assisted living regulations, please visit: www.mass.gov/elders. We are constantly evaluating and reevaluating each resident's status once they are part of our community. Formal care planning meetings take place every three months. These allow us the time to sit down as a group (family/Resident/NBOC team) to discuss how well this environment is serving the Resident. Sometimes it is necessary for a Resident to have additional private help to supplement the care offered here at NewBridge on the Charles.
When it is time to find the next community, we will give you our best recommendations of communities you might want to consider visiting. We also have very good relationships with many geriatric care managers who can help you in this next phase of your process.
